DTF 2025 and MSC Turn Words into Watts with Historic Dual Shore Power Connection

The Decarbonising the Future (DTF) 2025 Conference marked a decisive moment for maritime sustainability as Special Partner MSC achieved consecutive shore power connections for MSC World Europa and Explora II in Valletta. The milestone transformed the DTF platform from a space of dialogue into a live demonstration of decarbonisation in action.

DTF 2025 Press Release: DTF 2025 reaffirmed its standing as the Mediterranean’s leading forum for maritime and energy transition by turning conference themes into real-world outcomes. The back-to-back shore power connections by MSC showcased the operational maturity of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology and the strength of collaboration between industry leaders, port authorities, and energy providers.

For the first time, Explora II connected to shore power, drawing electricity directly from the grid, in tandem with MSC World Europa. The operation validated the readiness of both vessels and the Valletta Cruise Port systems to deliver on Europe’s environmental objectives, demonstrating how investment, regulation, and innovation converge to create measurable progress toward decarbonisation.

“DTF was designed to move the industry from conversation to implementation,” said a DTF spokesperson. “The MSC dual connection embodies that vision—showing that the technologies, partnerships, and determination to decarbonise shipping are not future ambitions but present realities.”

The achievement also underscored the economic dimension of decarbonisation. Beyond its environmental benefit, OPS generates value through infrastructure investment, cleaner urban air, and the creation of new technical and operational roles within the maritime and energy sectors. It provides a roadmap for how ports and operators can align competitiveness with sustainability.

Through partnerships such as that with MSC, DTF continues to set the benchmark for applied collaboration—where commitments evolve into results, and where the journey toward zero emissions is powered by evidence rather than aspiration.

About DTF

The Decarbonising the Future (DTF) Conference is Europe’s foremost platform driving dialogue and implementation across the maritime and energy sectors. Held annually in Malta, DTF brings together government leaders, port authorities, ship operators, and technology providers under the theme “Ports, Power and Partnerships: Driving Sustainability Together.” By bridging strategy and execution, DTF transforms policy discussions into tangible outcomes that accelerate the global maritime decarbonisation agenda.
