  • Location: Valletta Grand Harbour
  • Focus: OPS infrastructure (Phase1 & upcoming Phase 2), historic waterfront redevelopment, cruise operations.

The Grand Harbour - Europe’s First OPS-Enabled Cruise Hub
The Grand Harbour is Malta’s principal passenger and cruiseport, serving over 900,000 cruise passengers annually (2023).

OPS Project – Phase 1 (completed):

  • €49.9 million EU-cofunded investment.
  • 5 quays electrified (Deep Water Quay, Pinto 4/5,Lascaris Wharf).
  • Capacity: Power supply up to 16 MVA.
  • Annual emission reductions: >40,000 tonnes of CO₂ and 70% less NOx/PM around harbour communities.

OPS Project – Phase 2 (upcoming):

  • Extension to remaining cruise berths.
  • Incorporation of smart grid integration with Enemalta’s distribution network.
  • Target: Completion by 2027 to service all cruise berths.

Malta Freeport Port Tour

  • Location: Malta Freeport Terminal, Birżebbuġa
  • Focus: OPS integration at a major transhipment hub, digitalisation in container logistics, sustainability initiatives.

Malta Freeport - A Strategic Mediterranean Hub

Established in 1988, Malta Freeport is one of the Mediterranean’s top 10 transhipment ports.

  • Annual capacity: 3 million+ TEUs handled.
  • Connectivity: Links with 115 ports worldwide.
  • Hosts two container terminals and the Oil Tanking Malta terminal.
  • OPS & Sustainability Initiatives:
    • Shore power integration planned for container vessels – reducing reliance on auxiliary engines during berthing.
    • Investment in digital twin and automation for yard operations.
  • Environmental focus: reduction of CO₂ emissions, waste management, and efficiency in vessel turnaround.
