The Power of the Plug: Why Shore Power is the Next Frontier in Maritime Decarbonisation

OPS technology allows ships to shut down their engines at berth and draw clean electricity from the grid. According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, OPS can cut up to 98% of local air pollutants when powered by renewables. For port cities like Valletta, Barcelona, and Marseille, this means cleaner air for citizens and significant progress toward EU climate targets.

The EU’s AFIR regulation mandates OPS availability at TEN-T ports by 2030, making OPS deployment one of the most pressing infrastructure projects of this decade. For suppliers and ports, the business case is twofold: compliance and competitiveness. Ports equipped with OPS will attract greener fleets, while laggards risk regulatory penalties and reputational loss.
